Not only Black people are boycotting Target for dropping their DEI initiatives but some of us white folks too. We support you and all our diverse friends.
Another company that does not fulfill its promises to our communities. It is very sad! Even if this is resolved, I don't know if I will ever shop at Target again. It just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
I have not entered a Target store since Trump took office and I fully support any retailer who stands with the black community. A list would be helpful. I am retired and single so any shopping I do will make very minor impact, but I really hate the overt racism of this regime and the fact that it was so easy for these corporate merchants to end the facade that they cared.
I’ve lived in the Minneapolis area where Target was born and did good things for many, many years. The tamping down of people of color (and of women) has been outrageous forever. For no good reasons at all, Blacks in particular have been held back. I wrote yesterday in my own blog about a conversation with my WWII Marine father several years ago and in response to Dad’s blaming blacks for their own problems, I told him about how Black veterans and women of any color were denied GI Bill and federal housing benefits not by the Federal government but by the locals in the states who refused to give them their rights and benefits. One of my readers sent me this today:
“In fact, Katznelson documents how fewer than 100 of the 3,229 VA home loans distributed in Mississippi in 1947 went to Black veterans. Similar patterns held across the South and even in parts of the North. And when it came to higher education, most Black veterans were funneled into chronically underfunded HBCUs, as predominantly white institutions continued to exclude them either formally or through informal means.”
For those who got those benefits, it made an incredible impact. A positive one. For those who were cheated out of it, the impact has negatively impacted them for generations. The recent student loan grants have ruined the lives of many more. But that’s another article.
73-year old white woman here. In February, I added Target to my list of stores to boycott which includes Hobby Lobby, Home Depot, Walmart and Chick Fil A. I joined a group of students, staff and fellow faculty to stop Aramark from getting a Chick Fil A franchise on our CT university campus. We got Moe's instead. My not shopping at these places doesn't really amount to much of a loss in sales but, it adds up with others who are boycotting. Every little bit helps.
Thank you, Joy Reid, for reporting this story. Although not mentioned explicitly in the piece, I can’t help but see parallels between Target and MSNBC. I felt that by giving platforms to Black voices such as Melissa Harris Perry and Ms. Reid, among others, a promise was made that was never really delivered on long-term. The actions of these two entities are an object lesson in how powerful corporations become complicit in enforcing systemic and structural racism. I know my shopping — and viewing — habits are changing as I am intentionally “voting with my pocketbook” (as well as at the ballot box). On a more uplifting note, Rev. Jamal Bryant is an inspiration. We need courageous leaders like him right now to concretize the injustice of broken promises into a response that impels all of us to action and sacrifice. Thank you, Joy, for the great, intrepid reporting both at MSNBC and here on Substack. I’m very appreciative.
I was hoping Target would take courage from those who have stood up to trumps tyranny and reinstate DEI initiatives and buying practices, I see that they have not,
Trumps tyrannical DEI initiative is designed to divide and conquer
Tyranny cannot be appeased. It never works,
Tyranny only wins when we submit.
Solidarity is how we win.
I am hoping that this will be the moment in history when all Americans who have so far been left out of the Declaration of Independence’s dream of “equality for all men “ (yes we need to rewrite that so woman don’t have to remain invisible and only assume they are included)
will unite together in solidarity. If any member of our citizenry is treated as inferior, then we all suffer. I have a mixed genetic heritage like many Americans, but am designated white and will continue to boycott Target in solidarity with all who support Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Who, having any resemblance of decency could not be for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion?
Someone, tell me why I should care about Target without a full retraction from their actions. Even if they did retract it, it's like going back to an abusive partner that you know will reabuse. Let's not "Eyes Wide Shut" this shiid.
Can’t people just boycott permanently, without all the posturing from reverends that don’t actually speak for all black people? We need them to focus on the bigger picture. They do know that Trump & Co. are trying to extinguish us, right? Just stop spending our dollars with corporations that no longer hire or service us. Come on. Buy black. Hire black. They HATE us. So why are we always signaling our strategies to them? We need to build an educational structure for our children. We need to focus on affordable housing and entrepreneurship. We need to shore up HBCUs. (Make Oprah and Gayle do something useful with their money and celebrity.) We need investments and thinkers and teachers!
It's bad enough that Target walked away from these initiatives but walking away from them at the behest of a vile, racist, miscreant like Trump puts Target on the doorstep of no return without radical, systemic change. It willingly chose to adorn itself with a Scarlet MAGA because it figured Black people would "get over it" in time. We made it through Lent. We can hold firm through Pentecost. Target will feel like a fool when it misses that revenue target for Back to School. In December, it can channel Biggie with Christmas missed us.
Please share the article from Joy-Ann Reids Three part series with friends and family. This is a battle between good and evil. There is no middle ground. Make your mark on the BOYCOTE and sustain it all the way to the bancrutcy of Target or their FULLY WALK BACK THE FATAL DECISION IN JANUARY 2025. I will not set my footh in their store when i visit US again. I fully support the AMERICAN PEOPLE FIGHTING BACK THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION WERE EVER YOU CAN!!!. Stay the course🇺🇸🇳🇴👏👏❤️🌸💞

Absolutely! Especially women of all colors and races. Just NO Target!

Good, boycott any and all retailers that tosses away
their Honor!

Thank you for this important history,

I ask all MAGA, have you no decency?
