Dear Joy

I heard you say that you recently visited Ghana

My daughter spent 3 weeks there (as part of her graduate studies at University of Arizona), and now she is saying she wants to move to Ghana!

Any advice for her?

Your friend,

Judith

but Ole Miss doesn't mind all the football players they recruit -- they don't call that DEI...we can't expect any sort of consistency or honesty or morality.

Love you Joy! Canadian here. From western Canadian province, a petrostate with a hideous government threatening separation. THe monstrous provincial leader Danielle Smith loves hanging out at Mar-a-Lago and sells the rest Canada out by foregrounding her only interest. Oil. This provincial petrostate will sacrifice everything for the oily head office. Eleven of the provincial members of the legislature are separatists and want to join the U.S.

Antonio Gramsci wrote “…the new world struggles to be born: now is the time of monsters.”

I am grateful for your ode to joy at end of your interview, Joy. You caution us that this regime could be a long haul fight - these authoritarian regimes are difficult to dislodge. And so we need to find space to live with joy. I retired after more than three decades as an English prof. While I wasn’t anticipating this, after retirement I became a yoga teacher cuz I can integrate poetry and philosophy into my classes. That yoga daily practice and teaching makes me healthy and brings me joy. I hope it helps others find pleasure in the present moment in spite of these monstrous times.

I’ve marched and protested and am now thinking of dressing up in thrift-store finery ballgown to masquerade as a “Billionaire for Trump and Danielle Smith” at protests. Not very original but I’m trying to make myself laugh while doing something that engages with the catastrophe that is the present moment. Our federal election is in two weeks and we can either elect Mark Carney (former head of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England) of the Liberals or PP of the Conservative Party who is MAGA in disguise. I have my fingers crossed that Carney will win. He knows a lot about climate change and social issues and I am hoping he will do good things for this country and counter Trump effectively.

Thank you thank you for your excellent writerly and video work. And for your joy. And your insight. THank you for exploring the significance of DEI in your discussion. My beloved daughter is ethnic Chinese and I am so pissed at the way corporations and universities are caving on DEI and ignoring racism and misogyny. As you point out our demographic reality at this moment in time includes generations transformed. And the legacy of long struggles for civil rights and women’s rights and lgbtq2s rights.

So enjoy your presence in our lives. Solidarity forever & love,

Great seeing you again, JOY! You are even better here! Love seeing you in your hoodie and cap! I dropped outta MSNBC years ago, too expensive! but you were always my favorite!! re: Kamala, with all due respect, she (like Joni Ernst) towed the party line and set her courage, integrity, and convictions aside. Her failure to condemn the genocide gave the election to rump and I will never forgive her.
