Tonight’s the night! It’s a crucial night for Vice President Harris and for Donald Trump (though more important for the VP, who gets the opportunity to introduce herself to millions of Americans who are paying real attention to her for perhaps the first time.
What I’m watching for? VP Harris to establish her presidential bona fides, by being strong, direct and forthright, and by parrying what’s sure to be Trump’s insults and lies.
Also hoping to see the debate moderators fact check or at least allow Harris to fact check Trump’s lies, and for my profession, the media, to not “sanewash” Trump after tonight’s performance.

For me? Abortion, cost of living fixes, immigration and deportation policy, gun reform and gun policy, particularly around our schools and public places, international issues including Ukraine, Israel-Palestine and Venezuela, JD Vance’s attack on Haitian migrants, and bonus points if they talk about the Global South or the Americas, including the presence of Mexico’s first woman president.
