I hope artists (visual, writers, actors, etc.) of all cultures increase their documentation of America's real history that should be shown in art galleries and public places throughout the nation. It's time to stand up.

My April 5th protest sign: One side is a painting of the Klan in robes standing around a tree with Uncle Sam (a personification of the American people and government of the USA) hanging from a tree. Standing in front, robed Trump and Musk holding his chainsaw ... with a torn Constitution at their feet. The other side of the sign reads "Trump Destroys America's Well-being"

A massive effort is going to be needed to preserve what these people are deleting.

Excellent post. We need to figure out how to push the elected Repubs in congress to stand strong with the dems against trump. That is our only hope.

Cheers. And yes we need the opposition party to be stronger. Love what Senator Booker did last night on the floor but we will need more of that.

The First Crusade was a genocide.

Aramaic speakers were targeted. Certain whole groups massacred from 1096 on. Poor Urban has massive numbers of people massacred. Seems the Christian fascists do cherry pick history.

Thank you Joy for this read.

It just kills me that we are in this place. Control-Alt-Delete is the perfect title for what is happening in so many ways from history, to people, to our rights, our data, etc. We must continue to speak truth to power and never surrender our voices.

Excellent essay and points out the idiocy and lies of these proposals. I am, however, fascinated by what JD Vance will do to drive out "DEI" at the National Zoo. Dana Milbank has a great opinion essay in the Washington Post (yes, I know it shamelessly capitulated to Trump but you can read some essays via BlueSky) about how to route out immigrant animals. As I drove home yesterday I saw some Canadian geese and wondered whether or not I should tell them to quickly fly home before they were deported. It's all so asinine and, in the end, you can't control what's in people's minds. So, tell everyone the real history, tell the stories, sing the songs, play the music, buy the books, read the articles and keep the real history alive. DEI really stands for disorder, entitlement and impunity. I read this somewhere but thought that it clarifies the situation.

Joy...The kinds of horrors that have disgraced the United States have peppered human history everywhere. White on white, black on black, brown on brown, and always and everywhere men on women.....and every other combination possible given the right circumstances. (Except the incredible Bonobos...our politically brilliant female cousins of the Congo!)

I say it would help overall if we thought about the problem in terms of power...not race or gender. We evolved with the fatal flaw (or genius, depending) of all living things. ...an irrational lust to power cloaked in survival imperatives. Even plants will overgrow to the point of their own extinction if there is no countervailing force to keep them in check.

Everything you say is true...but I say would it take the tribal sting out of it - or at least lower the temperature of the tribal response - if we learned to think of our species as a whole...not focused on its apparent differences (which are de minimus when you get right down to it!).

A shift like this is a project, not a Substack comment....but one must begin somewhere.

You are an amazing writer … Sadly I can’t follow you on IG anymore because Meta disabled my acct today after ….hearting, liking and commenting on too many posts related to how awesome Cory did ~ So yeah IG literally banned me from IG for liking a lot of Senate Democrat posts … ( weird Meta = total injustice preventing me from seeing political news and accessing political posts )

We were just getting more accurate accounts of our history instead of filtered stories. With a name like Christian Nationalists you might think they practiced kindness.

Thanks, Joy, for all you do and have done. I'm a "white" 80yo retired physician/psychiatrist/addictionist/author of "Stress R Us", who grew-up in central Ohio, attended little Wittenberg University and Univ. of Wisconsin Med School. My best friend in college was a black African and we stayed in contact until he got his PhD in chemistry and returned to Zimbabwe. In my freshman year I helped organize an SCLC chapter and SAFE (student alliance for equality). We organized clothing donation drives that sent a ton of clothes to the Africans held in concentration camps in Musk's dear South Africa, while Mandela was imprisoned. I was de facto raised by a Black woman, our "maid", and spent my working life as a physician/psychiatrist caring for as many Black as "White" Americans. My best friend in Hilliard HS was a Black Irishman (descended from the Moroccan crewman remnants of the Spanish Armada that floundered on the Irish coast).

IMHO, Christian is as Christian does and the "White Nationalists" bear little resemblance to the life Jesus Christ lived, or his disciples wrote about later. The Age of Trump is an age of lying and suicidal destruction of American institutions. Hell is coming for Our Mad King (wannabe) Donald the 1st and his minions. I lived in Savannah, GA, for 7 yrs., early in my recovery from Alcoholism and Valium dependency. Most of the mental health professional staff I had the honor of working with were Black and high performing. I worked with a grand old White doctor who grew-up in smalltown GA and explained that up North, we celebrate Blacks as a group, but in the Deep South, white folks have personal relationships with Blacks but eschew them as a group. We are a multinational, multiracial society. If you don't like it, catch the next flight to Russia. Have a blessed day, one and all.

I know that it is important for you to teach your reader the history, but sometimes I find your entries too long. I read all of it because I love and respect your thoughts and opinion.
